Abbott and UTS initiate Faculty of Science prize
A strong association between Abbott Diagnostics Division and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) has been in place for almost a decade. Since 1998 Abbott staff have shared their vast knowledge of Haematology by lecturing to the UTS Biomedical and Medical Science students in the subjects Haematology 1 and Haematology 2. In addition, over a period of many years, Abbott has encouraged numerous UTS science students by sponsoring them to attend many local conferences and seminars. These have included Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ) and Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) events. This sponsorship has provided students with wonderful opportunities to experience science at a level that cannot possibly be achieved from class-room activities alone. Thus, many students have benefited academically, professionally and personally by experiencing professional science in action. Recently Abbott has very generously initiated a major Faculty of Science prize which is to be presented annually to the top science student in the subject Haematology 2. This prize was awarded for the first time on 21st June 2007 to Mayuko Kondo. I cannot think of better ways than these to encourage young scientists.
