Homocysteine

An amino acid produced as the body metabolizes protein. Homocysteine at high levels may damage arterial vessels thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In a study of 750 patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease, the investigators determined that increased plasma total homocysteine level confers an independent risk of vascular disease similar to that of smoking or hyperlipidemia.
